How To Get Your Own Website - Lesson 4
September 22nd, 2006
Let me say this before I go on. This series might sound a bit over-simplified to those of us in the web development business. Kindly bear with me. I just need ‘mere mortals’ to see possibilities. Everything I state here can actually be done without knowledge of advanced coding.
That said, let get down to business. You have a domain name that resolves to your web hosting account. Now you need a web site. You have the following options;
-Hire a professional to design your website.
-Learn HTML and build your site yourself.
-Use a Content Management System (CMS).
A closer look at the options;
-Hire a professional to design your website.
This is the easiest way out. But it’s not the cheapest. You’ll pay the professional a reasonable amount of money even if all you require is a one page website. This option is best if you need a really large site, like a corporate web site or an online store of some sort.
-Learn HTML and build your site yourself.
Well, what’s the purpose of this tutorial. We want you to get your own website. Do you have to learn HTML and buid one yourself. No. If you’re going to learn HTML you might as well become a professional web developer.
-Use a Content Management System (CMS).
This is your best option. This site runs on a content management system called WordPress. Nothing spectacular. It’s as simple as sending email. Seting up a CMS does require some hard work. For xample, wordpress requires that you set up a MySQL database in your web host account. You also have to be able to edit some HTML to customize your site, in case you don’t want to use default templates.
What’s your expert level?…….. Ok. Don’t tell us. Here’s a rally simple one. You can set up something called a weblog using Blogspot.com and then forward a previously registered domain to it. I mentioned this earlier in the tutorial series. No need to set a hosting account. The Blogspot account is free by the way.

Thanks very much for the lessons so far. It has been really exciting to learn how to own and even design a web site. I however, noticed you sent lesson 4 to me when I have not recieved lesson 3. It must have been a mix up. Please I will highly appreciate it if you can send the lesson 3 to me to fill the gap.
Cheers!

I am very pleased with your lesson in part 4. I wish to state that I am very sorry for inadvertantly deleting your previous lessons (i.e part 1 thru to 3). Could you please send them? I will be very grateful.
