Why do people fall for 419?

April 15th, 2006

I do not have an answer to that question. To me, it’s one of the wonders of the world. Some say it’s greed. Well, maybe. The aftermath of successful and reported 419 scams is this - the honest ones can’t do business online.

A Nigerian site with an offer to receive payments via credit cards automatically arouses suspicion. One of my domain names is still stuck at Godaddy.com because they have exclusively prohibited access to their site from any IP address originating from Nigeria. That’s a bit extreme. they should have a rethink. Some sites will not accept credit card payments from Nigeria. Even when the card is valid. What is EFCC doing about this? And the Central Bank? How are the so called advanced fees able to get through…………

Back to the question? Why do people fall for 419? I have no idea. Ok. Maybe we should leave the spilt milk and save what’s left in the cup. How can this menace be stopped? Any suggestions?

i wish to say that 419 is business on this own, whether u belive it or not none body can stop the business.because why im saying this is that most youths grow without good livings mostly in nigeria, then what do expect the one like that to do for his/her living.and many has the money why they cannot help others, and i also praise people who knows the business because is from the good gods, business without gun and u still make huge amount of money.even the business didnt require prison at all.because many government people in nigeria steals people money with only pin of little amount.bye

the bottom line is this, in every 419 deal there is always a corner to cut and the reason many people fall for it is that in thier quest for riches they do not wants to go the long haul, everybody is looking for a short cut, and that is the road that leads to bieng duped

if you’re out do business then stop looking for short cut, that way you would not fall for any scam [the underlining word is greed]

What do u expect! To sit dowm and die just like that? Out of 150 million people of this country about 95% are higherly impoverished. I mean very poor (can’t afford 3 square meal a day). My bros 419 is poverty driven period. Eradicate poverty today, 419 will be history.

There is a saying that the person who falls for 419 scams is either extremely greedy or extrmely stupid or both.
I have been approached by 419ers both offline in Nigeria and offline, here in the UK. I have friends here and in the States who have been approached by 419ers and they asked me for advice knowing that I’m Nigerian. To be honest, I’m usually quite suprised that they even consider some of these ridiculous offers. The reason why it’s difficult for legitimate nigerian businesses to build online is because of suspicion created by all the scammers. There are legitimate ways to make money online. It os obviously more difficult to build from Nigeria because we are still a cash economy and online business is electronic but the 419 scammers are killing credibility which will only make it more difficult. Lets clean up our acts and we would be able to make money online. It’s not a get rich quick system but if you know what you are doing within 4 years you can be making up to $5000 a month online.

U are right to say it takes two to tango. Well me also believe that if you are not a “418er”, you can never be a victim of “419er”. You must be very closed and greedy to fall for guy man. After all there’s this Chinese saying which says that “No such thing like free lunch” even in Nigeria, so let them pay. although we ask the government to eleviate the standard of living of the youth, possibly introduce the welfare pocket money programm as obtained else where, to eliminate desperado for illegal money.

It cannot be stopped by a decree, wishing it away, or an act of the national assembly because it is a business (illegal as it is) and only obeys the standard demand and supply of any other business. When this world is bereft of greedy and dishonest people then 419 will automatically stop.
Going to the way forward as our reputation of a 419 economy is wrecking havoc with online businesses we must not lose sight of the fact that basically there is a bit of 419 in most Nigerian businessmen.
Take this instance: when people started doing call termination in this country most of the equipment they used were brought in on credit. They made a lot of money believe me, but most never paid for these equipment. Late entrants to this business met a brickwall as most equipment manufacturers demanded for “cash and carry” contracts. This is not their normal way of doing business. Some of them not wanting to even bother themselves just cancelled out their stuff going any where near Nigeria.
This is to say that most Nigerian legal businessmen will do a subtle 419 (419 anyway) if given the opportuinity. He is always looking for a way to put one over the next guy.
Trust is a rare commodity in Nigeria. Really the Europeans and Americans have suffered in our hands probably because they are too trusting.
People have mentioned that it is hunger in the system that encourages 419. Sorry, I have to disagree. Most 419ers are comfortable. They are not worried about the next meal. It is just their sizeable measure of greed, zero fear of the law and no love for their neighbour that keeps them in this business. For the effort and intelligence that goes into a 419 setup the perpetrators could easily have made it good in any line of legal business they choose.
When we, as a people, start doing business as a win - win thing and stop trying to cut corners in our endeavours then will be able to do creditable business with the rest of the world.
